Curtly Ambrose Biography:


Sir Curtly Elconn Lynwall Ambrose is an Antigua-born former cricketer who played for the West Indies. For the West Indies team, he played 98 Test matches. Born on 21 September 1963 in Sweets, Antigua, Ambrose came to cricket at a relatively late age compared to many other players. He is a left-hand batsman and a fast right-arm bowler who in his Test career took 405 wickets. 

Background:

At the age of 17, Ambrose, the son of a carpenter, became an apprentice carpenter. His mother, a fan of cricket, persuaded him to engage in the game. Having a height of 6ft 7 inches, he turned out to be an outstanding bowler.

Debut:

When Pakistan toured the West Indies in 1988, Ambrose made his ODI debut against Pakistan. In the first match of the series, he made his debut and took 4 wickets for 39 runs. He made his Test debut in the same year and tournament against Pakistan at Bourda on April 2, 1988. He took two wickets in his Test debut.

Rise to glory:

In early 1990, England toured West Indies for a Test series where Ambrose performed remarkably well and took 8 wickets for 45 runs, and was adjudged Man of the Match. West Indies toured Pakistan at the end of 1990, and he topped his team's bowling averages. In a later series with England, he played remarkably well when he twice took five wickets in an innings and his best figures were six for 52 runs. The man of the match and the man of the series for the West Indies side was adjudged.

Achievements and Awards:

After his retirement in 2000 after a series against England, he became a part of the ICC hall of fame in 2011 for his outstanding career records. Ambrose was rated the world's best bowler in the ICC player rankings, first reaching the top in 1991. He has adjudged the Knight Commander which is an Antiguan and Barbudan order of chivalry in 2014.

FUN FACTS:

Ambrose is a bass guitarist for the Reggae band Big Bad Dread and the Baldhead. When he left school at 17, Ambrose worked as an apprentice carpenter. The phrase, “Curtly talk to no man” came about when he refused to give an interview to a commentator in 1991.
